8 notes (2:24)Dexter Gordon: Blue Note 1961-65
“Soul Sister” from Dexter Calling (1961)
Bluely Noted digs a jazz waltz — Fats Waller’s “Jitterbug Waltz,” Sonny Rollins’ “Valse Hot,” and seemingly half of Bill Evans’ catalog (including his “Waltz For Debby”) have a 3/4 or 6/8 time signature — and Dexter’s “Soul Sister” from his second Blue Note release, Dexter Calling, is the groovy end. Recorded the same year as the previous Doin’ Allright, Dexter Calling had Kenny Drew on piano, and Miles Davis’ rhythm section (bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Philly Joe Jones) on the call.
